~ Neale Donald Walsch
Because of past failures, do you believe losing weight isn’t possible for you? If you believe that weight loss story, that’s where you will stay because your subconscious will believe the story you tell it. You need to tell yourself a story of possibility, not one of defeat.
Try this one on for size: “I just haven’t found the right method for me yet.” Or, “Up until now, I haven’t been ready to address the real reasons I overeat or stay overweight.”
These beliefs and statements allow for future possibilities. They’re open-ended.
The truth is you might not have been really ready to look at the reasons you turn to food. Or being overweight may be serving deeper needs of yours, like making you feel safe. Or, maybe your past methods have failed you. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t be successful now or in the future. You need to let go of your past failures. But before you do, I recommend looking at your methods.
Have you tried all kinds of diets? Dieting in the long term won’t bring you success, because after you’re done dieting you’ll go back to your old ways and regain the weight. If you’re a person that uses food to cope with emotions, dieting won’t work for you. It doesn’t teach you how to deal with life. If you eat because of stress, then learning ways to manage that stress is essential. Get honest and take a good look at what is holding you back from being successful and get willing to address those issues. Don’t set yourself up for failure by trying to put a Band-Aid (diet) on a gaping wound.
Yes, it takes courage to look at the deeper issues, but unless you do, you will stay stuck in a self-defeating cycle of behavior. And all that does is reinforce your belief that you’ve failed and success isn’t possible for you. Remember, if you want something different, you must do something different.
