The most useful piece of learning for the uses of life is to unlearn what is untrue.
While attempting to lose weight, most people lose motivation after a couple of weeks or months. Then they either stop altogether or they begin to engage in self-sabotage and backslide to their old ways. This can be very discouraging but the good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. If we understand what gets in the way of our motivation, we will be able to get back on track very easily.
What trips people up the most in the motivation game are the self-limiting beliefs they hold. As they attempt change, they come up against these beliefs and they cause great anxiety and frustration, and they soon lose steam and then quit or backslide. These beliefs are usually some version of:
- I must do this perfectly. If I can’t, I might as well quit.
- Mistakes are bad. They mean I’m a failure and a bad person.
- I don’t have what it takes to accomplish my goal.
- I’m not good enough.
- I don’t deserve to be successful.
If any of these ring true for us, the best thing we can do is to question the truthfulness of these beliefs. Spiritual teacher Byron Katie created a series of four simple questions known as The Work. These questions are very effective at cutting through self-limiting beliefs and getting to the truth underneath our thinking patterns.
Here are the four questions:
Is it true? Can you absolutely know that it’s true? Where’s the evidence that this thought is true? List the evidence. How do you react when you think that thought? Who would you be without that thought?
Byron then has you do a simple turnaround of your belief. For a worksheet on how to do The Work, and to see it in action on video, check out Bryon’s website at www.thework.com.
Often we hang on to these beliefs because they are a way of protecting ourselves. They allow us to stay right where we are: safe and sorry. Then we get to be right about ourselves. Life does have a way of giving us what we expect.
We are the authors of the particular story line we are living. If we don’t like the story, it’s time for a rewrite! Once we let go of the beliefs that are holding us back, we will find that moving forward is pretty effortless because we aren’t in conflict with ourselves and sabotaging our success. If we lose steam, which is only natural at times, we will be able to get back on track quickly, instead of engaging in guilt, shame, and self-criticism.

Is emotional eating keeping you from losing weight and living the life you want? Are you ready to master your weight and your life?
If so, you may be a candidate for coaching. Coaching can make the difference between success and failure.
I have found that people who struggle with food and emotional eating are released from that prison once they learn the skills of mindful awareness and mindful eating, emotional self-nurturing, developing a spiritual or meditation practice, and learning to set appropriate limits and goals.
This turns off the urge to overeat and engage in other compulsive behaviors. When you feel better, you eat better! I have walked this path myself, and it has led me to peace and freedom.
The goal of my coaching is to create a lighter, balanced, healthier, nourishing and joy-filled life. You will begin to see results in all areas of your life because How You do Food is How You do Life!®
I coach and mentor people in the areas of: permanent weight loss, food addiction, compulsive, emotional overeating, binge eating recovery, creative self expression, spiritual direction, mindfulness, meditation, self care and stress management, self esteem and body image issues.
Note: My work is spiritually focused, not religious, and fits with any belief system you may have, even agnostic. My work assumes that you have all the wisdom and answers you need inside of you.
What you call this place — God, intuition, Higher Power, inner wisdom, or True Self — is up to you. I am simply a guide bringing you back to the truths that are already inside of you.
