Being different is a gift you are born with. Don’t misuse it by trying to fit in.
Deep down, many of us overeaters feel different from other people. We may present a façade to the world of calm and having it all together, but inside we may feel flawed, inadequate, and not up to dealing with the constant demands of life. Food and overeating has been our way of dealing with these feelings. Often, after a hard day’s work or some other demanding situation, we retreat in solitude to numb ourselves out with food.
Some of us are introverted and find the extroverted oriented world we live in a bit overwhelming. Many of us are overscheduled, our lives are packed to the brim with a to do list that never ends. And some of us are in jobs that are a bad fit, with too much stress or not enough utilization of our strengths and talents.
Growing up, we may have been the black sheep in our family, never feeling like we belonged. Or we may have been shy and awkward around others, and been bullied or abused as children. All these situations can leave us feeling that we are different and don’t belong to the rest of the world.
Feeling different can cause us to isolate from the world, never developing the truly nourishing relationships we crave. It can undermine our confidence and make us afraid to take risks. It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s really how we interpret being different.
Each one of us is unique, like a snowflake. There will never be another one quite like us. We didn’t come here to be someone else. We were born to shine our own unique light out into the world. We are all born with gifts and talents. We each have our own special song to sing. We need to celebrate our uniqueness, not hide it.
We will always share more similarities than differences with other people. We all bleed, laugh, love, have quirks, want to be happy, grow old and die. When we stop focusing on the differences we see on the surface, we will begin to see the similarities lurking underneath. This in turn will lessen our feelings of being different and separate from others. Though each of us is unique and different, we are all spiritual beings and fellow travelers on the same path – sharing the experience of what it’s like being human here on Earth.

Weight Stigma Awareness Week is September 23-27.
Weight stigma affects people of all shapes and sizes. What is weight stigma? Bullying, teasing, negative body language, harsh comments, discrimination or prejudice based on a person’s body size or weight. (BEDA, 2010). People are often surprised that once they lose weight, they are now being stigmatized for their smaller size. Thin people are often made fun of, criticized, or the target of jealous comments and envy. Overweight people themselves are often highly critical of other overweight people. I’ve had many overweight clients tell me that they would never date or marry an overweight person. Ouch! And sometimes the worst stigmatizer is the one that lives in our own heads; the one that bashes our body and bullies us on an almost daily basis.
