Healing from compulsive overeating takes place on the level of mind, body, and spirit. This is a holistic approach. You cannot completely heal by focusing on just one of these areas. The word holistic means an emphasis on the whole system, as opposed to focusing on the separate parts of a whole.
When you are compulsive with food, psychological needs and stressors are driving your eating. Dieting, or just exercising more never works for this because it never gets to the root cause of the problem.
When you begin to address your deeper needs healing will begin. Compulsive eating is always a symptom of spiritual unease. The behavior is filling a need in your life. Healing will come when you find out what needs are being filled by eating, and find healthier ways to meet those needs.
What drives my eating? How might I begin to meet my needs in ways that are nonfood related? What parts of me need nourishing?
