Weight Loss and Perfectionism: Life Is Good Enough
A good enough life is the only life there is.
Permanent weight loss requires that we adopt a more realistic
attitude towards life. Many emotional overeaters suffer
from unrealistic expectations. We want life to be easy. We want it all now without
investing the
hard work that the best in life requires. We long for instant fixes,
magical
pills, and fast weight loss with the perfect diet. We are certain that
when our bodies are in shape we will be happy.
Each new diet starts out as the answer. We’re full of excitement as
we hope
that this time it will be different.
Then, when we don't see instant results right away, our
motivation goes
right out the window. In frustration, we go off in search of yet
another diet.
Many of us have been on this treadmill for years. The results are now
staring
at us in the mirror.
Many of us have given up, deciding that losing weight isn't
possible for us. This has led to us feeling hopeless, fat and full of
despair.
Other people seem to get the good in life, how come we can't? Many of
us
conclude that there must be something wrong with us; we must be
defective at
our very core.
We have come to the wrong conclusion. The truth is there is nothing
wrong
with us. Only our thinking and beliefs are flawed. There is no softer,
easier
way.
Permanent weight loss requires hard work and discipline. It also
requires
patience and determination. It is one of the most challenging things
you will
ever do. Losing weight permanently requires making a long-term
commitment to
one's health and happiness.
Yes, the path to permanent weight loss is not an easy one. Yet the
rewards
that come with it are great. The satisfaction, joy and true self esteem
that
comes from living a healthy life, setting goals and achieving them,
looking and
feeling better, and having the energy to deal with the challenges of
life are
some of the best rewards life has to offer.
If you want to lose weight permanently, you must decide that you are
willing
to do what it takes to get there. You must accept that hard work is
required.
This means regular exercise, eating less, getting support, and changing
your
attitudes and beliefs about life. All these things are required to be
successful.
You must be willing to let go of the idea of the quick fix. You must
also be
willing to let go of the idea that you are going to achieve perfection
some
day. You must decide that being a perfectly imperfect person who
struggles with
a weight problem is good enough for right now.
Yes, you are never going to have the perfect life that you have in
your
head. It might come close, but it won't be perfect. Peace and happiness
comes
when you decide that a good enough life is a good life. This isn't
settling for
second best, it is settling for what is. This is what everyone has.
A good enough life is a happy and peaceful life. It is a life with
in your
reach. It is right here, right now. It is what is.
From this place you can work at being better, but not perfect.
Every day is another chance to get it right. So is every moment.
Right now is the perfect moment. It is the time to decide that you
have a
good enough life, even with a weight problem.
Yes, happiness is within reach. It is yours for the taking. You
don’t have
to wait to lose weight to be happy. All you need to do is decide to be
happy.
It is your choice.
You can decide that you are good enough as is. This doesn’t mean
that there
isn’t room for improvement. It just means you are no longer postponing
your
peace and happiness until you improve.
Yes, life is good enough.
It really is.
Affirmations:
Life is good enough. I accept that I
will never
be perfect. I accept that I am a work in progress. I become whole by
accepting
all of me - the good, bad and imperfect. I am good enough as is, and
this is
good enough for me.
