Be Yourself!
June 25, 2013

By being yourself, you put something wonderful in the world that was not there before.
—Edwin Elliot

Many of us hide behind the roles we play in the world. We may even confuse our identity with these roles, but they are something we do, not who we are. Some of us feel we must wear a mask and present a false self to the world because deep down we feel that who we truly are is inadequate and unworthy. We may have adopted this false self so early in life that we now believe it to be who we really are.

Trying to be something or someone we’re not is ultimately self-defeating and exhausting. We cannot fulfill our destiny and potential if we are busy being someone else. This can lead us to feel like we’re imposters in the world, and live with the fear of being found out. It also leads to despair, depression, and right to the refrigerator.

Authentic people are transparent people. They have fully embraced their humanness – their strengths and weaknesses - and in their company we feel free to express ours. As we become more whole and authentic, by practicing self-acceptance and loving-kindness towards ourselves, we come to realize that this mask is no longer necessary - who we are is good enough - there is truly nothing to defend or protect. We can then allow ourselves to become fully visible to others and let our true light shine out into the world.

Quotes and Reflective Questions

  • We are so accustomed to disguising ourselves to others that in the end we become disguised to ourselves.
    —François Duc de La Rochefoucauld
  • In what ways or situations do I feel I must present myself as someone I'm not?
  • What would happen or what would it mean if someone found out that I wasn't really who I present myself as? How would that make me feel?
  • How big is the gap between how I like to be perceived and who I really am? What steps do I need to take to make that gap smaller or even close that gap?
  • If I was to be my true self out in the world what do I think would happen?
  • Can I bring more acceptance and love towards those parts of myself that I feel I must hide because I think they are unacceptable?

Is emotional eating keeping you from losing weight and living the life you want? Are you ready to master your weight and your life?

If so, you may be a candidate for coaching. Coaching can make the difference between success and failure.

I have found that people who struggle with food and emotional eating are released from that prison once they learn the skills of mindful awareness and mindful eating, emotional self-nurturing, developing a spiritual or meditation practice, and learning to set appropriate limits and goals.

This turns off the urge to overeat and engage in other compulsive behaviors. When you feel better, you eat better! I have walked this path myself, and it has led me to peace and freedom.

The goal of my coaching is to create a lighter, balanced, healthier, nourishing and joy-filled life. You will begin to see results in all areas of your life because How You do Food is How You do Life!®

I coach and mentor people in the areas of: permanent weight loss, food addiction, compulsive, emotional overeating, binge eating recovery, creative self expression, spiritual direction, mindfulness, meditation, self care and stress management, self esteem and body image issues.

Note: My work is spiritually focused, not religious, and fits with any belief system you may have, even agnostic. My work assumes that you have all the wisdom and answers you need inside of you.

What you call this place -- God, intuition, Higher Power, inner wisdom, or true self -- is up to you. I am simply a guide bringing you back to the truths that are already inside of you.
